PURPOSE:To obtain a heat insulating material capable of developing excellent heat insulating capacity in the heat insulating use of a low temp. region by carbonizing a phenol resin foamed body to obtain a carbon porous body specified in its bulk density, carbon content and specific surface area. CONSTITUTION:A heat insulating material for the heat insulation of a low temp. region is a carbon porous body obtained by carbonizing a phenol resin foamed body. The bulk density of this heat insulating material is within a range of 0.03-0.3g/cm<3> and, within this range, heat insulating capacity equal to or more than that of an org. heat insulating material, for example, a phenol resin foamed body or a polyurethane foamed body in the same density can be obtained. Further, the carbon content thereof is 85-95%, pref., 88-92% and the carbon porous body within this range has many fine voids and low heat conductivity and is also extremely excellent in heat insulating capacity. When the specific surface area thereof is 100m<2>/g or more, the heat insulating material shows properties of expanding a volume as temp. becomes lower. |
