Described are preforms for metal matrix composites consisting of a ceramic material belonging to the class of the oxides, nitrides, carbides, borides, oxynitrides and the like, prevailingly in an acicular form and having a monocrystalline or polycrystalline structure, having a density of from 0.2 to 1.6 g/cm<3> and a porosity of from 50 to 95%.
