Salts of compounds of formula X min OCOCH2CH(CO2X sec )SO3H in which one of X min and X sec is a hydrogen atom and the other is a group of formula ROX- in which R is an alkyl or alkylphenyl group having 8 to 18 carbon atoms and X is a polyalkylene glycol residue comprising 0.5 to 5 alkylene oxide residues which preferably comprise propylene oxide and ethylene oxide residues in a molar ratio of 0 to 2.5:1 are suitable for use as skin-protective agents in hard surface cleaning applications.
