<p>Prepn. of equilenin (derivs.), of formula (I) comprises treating derivs. of formula (II) with Na(AlH2(OCH2CH2OCH3)2) (III), then opt. conventional oxidn. of 17-OH or removal of alkylenedioxy or ether gp. (R3 = H or alkoxy; R4 = oxo, alpha-OH/beta-H; alpha-alkoxy/beta-H or alkylenedioxy; R5 = H, alkoxy or acyloxy; R6 = alpha-OH/beta-H; alpha-alkoxy/beta-H; alpha-acyloxy/beta-H; or alkylenedioxy). (I) are starting materials for prodn. of pharmaceutically-active steroids and are themselves useful as oestrogens in human and veterinary medicine.</p> |
