Filtration improves for diesel and fuel oils - from reaction of maleic anhydride with paraffins, and esterification or salt

Additives for middle distillates from petroleum are obtd. by reaction of (1) are paraffin with mol. wt. 700-4000, with (2) maleic anhydride or acid, and (3) subsequent semi-esterification 1-22C hydroxy cpds. or their mixts. contg. >=1 OH gps., and/or soap-formation with metal ions of Groups I and/or II, including Zn. The paraffin (1) may alternatively be reacted with the product of (2) and (3). Used in diesel and fuel oils to improve filtration properties. The prods. have much better solubility in fuel oils than usual paraffins or polymers added for this purpose. The soaps also form metal oxides on combustion, which combine with sulphur oxides esp. SO3, and reduce acid condensn. and corrosion in the furnace or exhaust gas system.
