Prepn. of cystine from cysteine in aq. soln. at pH 4 or lower pH in the presence of dimethyl sulfoxide comprises oxidn. of an aq. soln. of cysteine obtd. by an enzymatic method or fermentation. L-cystine is useful as a drug, an intermediate for drugs, a food additive, a cosmetic additive, and esp. as a material for cold permanent wave liq. (1) Cystein can be rapidly oxidised at stable state with little loss. (2) The obtd. cystine is soluble at the pH and can be sterilised by heating without loss.
