PRODUCTION OF BASE MATERIAL FOR OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To improve strength and durability by impregnating a sol prepd. by hydrolyzing a mixture of alkoxides of Si, Zr and Ti into a porous base material for an optical fiber and by heating the base material in a prescribed atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:Fine glass particles are deposited on the periphery of a base material for an optical fiber to form a porous base material for an optical fiber. A mixture of Si alkoxide with Zr alkoxide and/or Ti alkoxide is hydrolyzed to prepare a sol. This sol is impregnated into the porous base material and this base material is made transparent by heating in an He atmosphere contg. an N-contg. compd.
