A cylinder (1) containing a discharge substance contains spatially separate first electrodes (3) and a second electrode (4). A separator element (2) devides the internal space of the cylinder into plural separate discharge paths each including one of the first electrodes (3) and the second electrode. Plural luminescent layers of different colour emission are on the inner surfaces. The separator (2a,2b,2c,2d) is provided in an additional vessel (7) which has first and second discharge passage openings, the first of which is adjacent to the first electrode (3a,3b,3c,3d). The luminescent layers are deposited on the internal face of this vessel (7). The vessel may be cylindrical or shaped as a truncated cone. A screen for prevention of glow discharge may be provided.
