A strain of Streptomyces flavogriseus, preferably NRRL 8139 or 8140, is cultivated under submerged aerobic conditions in an aqueous nutrient medium which contains assimilable C and N sources and inorganic salts, and the produced antibiotic is isolated. The antibiotic, also in the form of non-toxic, pharmaceutically acceptable salts which can be obtained by reaction with inorganic or organic bases, shows remarkable antibiotic properties and is active against a wide range of pathogens as well as against resistant strains of particular microorganisms. The antibiotic shows in vivo activity against Gram-negative and -positive organisms and is suitable for use in human and veterinary medicine and as an antibacterial agent for commercial and industrial purposes. |
