PURPOSE: To quickly detect the presence and concentration of a gas component and, at the same time, to accurately monitor the gas component by distributing an electrolyte along a horizontally extended narrow and log element by utilizing a capillary action. CONSTITUTION: A detecting system has a narrow and long element 10 which is extended along a horizontally laid pipe 12 and positioned near a zone 13 at which the release of such a gas as the chlorine gas must be monitored. The zone 13 houses a storage container which contains, for example, the gas and the element 10 is positioned near the valve of the container or the part of the container, such as the flange, etc., from which the gas may leak out when, for example, the integrity of the container is broken. The element 10 contains a liquid electrolyte distributed in the length direction of the element 10 and is provided with a pair of electrode wires 14 and 16. The wires 14 and 16 are extended together with the element 10 while the wires are separated from the element 10. The electrolyte is selected in accordance with the gas to be detected and composed typically of the aqueous solution of a deliquescent salt. The electrolyte is distributed along the element 10 by utilizing a capillary action. |
