A shaft seal has a stationary sealing ring (24) in rubbing face-to-face contact with a rotatable sealing ring (13) with the stationary sealing ring (24) being supported by an annular elastomeric disc-like carrier (22) which applies the necessary face-to-face contact pressure to the sealing ring (24) and takes up or compensates for wear in the contacting seal faces. The annular carrier (22) may be radially compressed or stretched to provide respectively low or high axial stiffness in the carrier in the region of the stationary ring (13) and consequent long or short axial travel of the latter. The annular disc-like carrier (22) permits reduction in the axial length of the shaft seal. |
