The present invention relates to a drive for machines winding cables or similar elongate objects on and off a drum, i.e., machines of the so-called portal type, comprising at least two columns (1,2). Each of said columns supports a support elements (3,4) that can be moved in the vertical direction of said columns by a power unit. Each of said support elements carries a bearing boss (5, 6) intended for insertion into the centre hole of a cable drum (7) or the like. The bearing bosses (5, 6) can be moved in approximately the vertical direction with the aid of a second power unit for the purpose of raising the cable drum (7) from the foundation with clearance. At their upper ends the support elements (3,4) are suitably connected by a transverse, telescopically extensible crossbeam (8,9), such that the support elements (3,4) and the cross beam (8,9) can be moved vertically as one unit. The cable drum (7) can be rotated for the purpose of winding cable on or off by means of least one somewhat resilient wheel (11) which can be rotated by at least one drive (10). The wheel (11) can rest against the flange (12,13) of the cable drum (7) so as to drive it. The wheel (11) is supported in a bearing at one end (14) of a link (15), which is secured approximately at its centre by a pivot to one of the support elements (8,9) and at its other end (17) it is secured to one end of a guy (18) whose other end is pivoted suitably to one of the column (1,2) so as to be stationary. The length of both the link (15) and the guy (18) is so selected that when the bearing bosses (5,6) have entered the centre hole of the cable drum (7) but the drum has not yet raised by them, the drive wheel (11) should be at a defined but small distance from the flanges (12,13) of the drum (7) such that the drum flange (12,13) is pressed against the yielding wheel (11) in a defined manner when the drum (7) is raised by the bearing bosses (5,6) by a predetermined amount. |
