A sinuous core 26 is rotated within the loosely-fitting stem 32 of a figure 24 which is non-rotatably secured to a base 22. The base has a convex lower surface 28 on which the whole toy rocks as a result of the centre of gravity shifting caused by movement of the figure. The motor for rotating the core 26 may be energised in response to a sensed stimulus, e.g. sound. The figure may include a hinged mouth biased closed but opening in response to the figure's movement.
