The invention relates to a process for preparing copper/copper oxide catalysts on the basis of silicate supports. According to the invention, an alkali metal sheet silicate (phyllosilicate) or alkaline earth metal silicate or silicic acid is reacted with a copper salt solution and aqueous ammonia solution, ammonia optionally being removed, at a temperature of at least 80 DEG C. The product obtained is then isolated and dried in a conventional manner or, after isolating and drying, converted into the supported copper catalyst by reduction with hydrogen. The invention further relates to the use of the catalysts obtained in the process for hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, oxidation and chlorination reactions.
