The method is for removing tin from household waste cans which are subjected to pre-processing in which all or much of the associated dirt is disposed of. The tin is then stripped. The pre-processing comprises supplying heat to a pyrolysis treatment of the tin in which the associated dirt is totally or partially carbonised and pyrolysis gas is produced. The tin is then subjected to shredder treatment reducing the size of the tin and is subjected to a cleaning process removing the carbonised dirt. The pyrolysis heat is supplied in the form of hot gases obtd. from burning a fuel. The gases discharged from the pyrolysis treatment are then reburnt and recirculated. The cleaning process comprises sieving and washing.
