An electromagnetic drive system comprises a component (15) movable along its axis and carrying a drive coil (10), and a magnetic system having a first portion (60) comprising an axially extending magnet providing a radial flux and placed in a magnetic path formed by elements of magnetically soft magnetic material (62, 64) and second, flux concentrating portion (66) axially adjacent said first portion and comprising a component of magnetically soft magnetic material in which is formed an air gap in which the drive coil is positioned.
