<p>A base assembly for the foot of a vertical column (39) in e.g. a pergola, garden arbour or like structure adjusts during assembly from a nominal to a specific verticality and placement and thereby avoids placement stresses in the structure being erected. One embodiment has a fixing cylinder (23), driven into the earth, carrying a fixed cruciform datum support (27, 28) with eight threaded holes, four referenced as at (30) and four as at (29). The cylinder is hammered in. Flat-head support screws (21) are screwed into holes (30). Plate (2) is laid upon the heads of screws (21). Screws (22) are loosely connected in holes (29). Cylinder (23) is turned so that slot (11) in plate (2) orients in the desired direction, so that bolt (19) can locate as desired along the slot (bar (27) prevents its fall). The plate (2) is levelled by turning screws (21) via holes (10), and then secured firmly by screws (22) to leave bolt (19) protruding accurately vertically and in an exact desired position, but incapable of rotation because its head is caught in a recess around slot (11). A base fitment (32) can then be fitted over bolt (19) to receive the tapered lower end of column (39).</p> |
