2-Substituted derivs. of propionic acid formula (CH3-CH(R)-COOH I (where R is 4-methoxy-2-naphthyl or 4-isobutyl-phenyl) are prepared by reacting corresponding aldehyde with aq. H2O2, in a water-miscible medium, at -15 to +60 degrees C and in the presence of catalytic amounts of SeO2.I are used as antiinflammatory agents.
