Containment of floating, polluting oil on the sea surface is accoomplished by the complete or partial encircling of the oil slick, respectively floating uncontrolled oil spill source, respectively subsea spill source's sea surface projection (5) by means of a floating barrier/boom (6), by which means to contain the spread and facilitate the recovery of the oil. In order to establish such a barrier/boom in a flexible manner suited to the conditions at hand in each particular pollution incident, a barrier/boom (6) is generated in situ from ice by means of the successive discharge of cold gas (refrigerated, possibly liquid gas, including refrigerated air) from a predetermined depth/position (8') below the sea surface while the cold gas discharge craft (7) is caused to pursue an encircling path (P) around the pollution source/pollution area (5). During its ascent from the discharge depth/position the cold gas releases more or less of its cold content to the immediately proximate seawater masses in order to cause the freezing of these and the establishment of the said ice barrier/ice boom (6). |
