<p>The bottle (1) has two rings (2) around the circumference. The rings have different reflective characteristics from the main body of the bottle. The rings may be produced as part of the bottle, or may be strips of coloured material stuck onto it. The bottle passes (P) an optical probe (3) at a constant rate, allowing the ratios between the heights (a,c) of the rings and the gap (b) between them to be measured. The ratio (a:b:c) is an indication of the contents and size of the bottle.
