The invention relates to a process for preparing chloropentafluoroethane in gas phase by causing hydrofluoric acid to act on dichlorotetrafluoroethane in the presence of a catalyst, with the said catalyst being prepared by causing aluminium oxide, whose content of sodium oxide is less than 300 ppm and which possesses pores having a radius of 40 Angstrom and above and a volume of more than 0.7 cm3/g, to react, in gas phase, with hydrofluoric acid or a mixture of hydrofluoric acid and air, nitrogen or a fluorine compound.
