The two-stroke ic-engine with at least one inlet (7) and one exhaust (8) valve per cylinder, has the valve timing arranged to provide an overlap in the operation of the two valves. In order to ensure that the combustion chamber is thoroughly scavenged by the incoming fresh air, the inlet valve port has a projection (11). This projection (11) deflects the incoming air towards the cylinder wall on the side of the cylinder opposite to the exhaust valve (8).
