A novel process for preparing alkyl esters which comprises reacting a homologous ester having one methylene group less in the alkyl group than the desired ester with carbon monoxide and hydrogen at high temperature and pressure in the presence of elemental cobalt, rhodium, ruthenium or iron, or a salt thereof as catalyst.
