A sabot, pref. made with a plastic casing (13) surrounding a heavy metal projectile (11), is affixed to a rear head (12) made of light metal and into which the projectile is fitted, either by a screw-coupling or by engagement of head material in a circumferential groove (17). THe head consists of sectors (18) integral with a retaining ring (20) forming the connection for the sectors, and with preferred breakage points (21) between the sectors to ensure head and ring break into multiple separate fragments on release from the projectile after firing. USE - Fragmentation of sabot reduces risk to personnel near gun after firing.
