The two-stroke internal combustion engine has at least one inlet and one exhaust valve per cylinder. It has the valve timing arranged to provide an overlap in the operation of the two valves in order to scavenge the combustion chamber with fresh incoming air. Under full load operation, the inlet valve opens at the angular position (Eo) of the crankshaft and closes at the angular position (Es) (fig 1). Controls are provided to change the timing of the opening and closing of the inlet valve when operating under part load. The effective stroke of the piston is then increased from (Vv) to (Vt) but the angle (alpha) of rotation of the crankshaft between opening and closing remains the same. USE - Two stroke IC-engines.
