The invention concerns the optical detection of ice.
<??>A source (1) sends light to a receiver (3) through an optical channel (2) one part (24) of which has an interface with the external medium. The light arriving at this interface is reflected towards the receiver (3) when the external medium is in contact with air, and is refracted towards the external medium when rain or ice is present. When rain runs off the interface, it modulates the receiver signal: this does not occur with ice. Circuits downstream from the receiver (3) look for the modulation in order to ascertain whether the changes in the receiver signal are due to rain or ice.
