The surface coil according to the invention consists of several conductor sections (19a - 19g), which can be connected to one another via switches (22 - 31) and to a receiving unit (21) in such a manner that the conductor sections (19a - 19g) connected to the receiving unit (21) enclose different areas depending on the position of the switches (22 - 31). In this arrangement, the outer contour of the surface coil is designed in such a manner that the area enclosed by it overall exhibits a width which changes over the length of the surface coil (19). Thus, the surface coil can be constructed, in the case of objects under examination which exhibit a distance from the surface under examination which changes over the length of the surface coil, in such a manner that each part of the object under examination is reproduced with maximum signal/noise ratio.
