The invention relates to an arrangement for reducing the noise during the operation of percussion drilling machines, used in particular in underground mining and tunnelling, by restricting the generation of acoustic vibrations of the drill rod and limiting the emission of mechanical vibration energy from the drill-rod surface. The generation of acoustic vibrations is largely restricted to the shank end of the drill rod by fastening a sleeve-like, metal mass collar and two additional masses held at a defined distance from the mass collar by a sleeve-like plastic element (mass ratio of mass collar to additional mass: about 4:1). The emission of mechanical vibration energy is limited by applying a sequence of four sleeve-like plastic elements each and a sleeve-like metal additional mass following the arrangement described above. The entire damping arrangement covers about one-third to one half of the drill-rod length so that the removal of the drill cuttings is not unreasonably restricted and the increase in weight of the drill rod is kept within limits.
