The retaining wall comprises a number of, at least, partly pre-fabricated-upright load-bearing members (1) between which curved shells (2) in concrete or similar material are formed in situ to provide a gap-less joint with the adjoining members to either side. The members may be H-section steel girders, or reinforced or prestressed concrete beams. The edges of the shells may bear on the corner between the web (3) and a flange (4) of the girder on the side of the cutting. These edges may fill the entire space between the flanges of the H-section member.
