PURPOSE:To produce the subject compounds which are intermediates for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., in good yield using simple operation by subjecting a styrene derivative and catechol borane to asymmetric hydrooration oxidation in the presence of a specific optically active metal complex in a solvent. CONSTITUTION:A styrene derivative expressed by formula II (X' is H, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy) and catechol borane are subjected to asymmetric hydroboration oxidation in the presence of an optically active metal complex expressed by formula I (M is Rh, Ir, Ru or Pd; X is phenyl or p-tolyl; Y is 1,5-cyclooctadiene or norbonadiene; Z is BF4, ClO or PF6) in a solvent to provide optically active alpha-phenethyl alcohols expressed by formula III. For example, 1,5-cyclooctadiene rhodium tetrafluoroborate complex, etc., of 2,2'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1'- binaphthyl are cited as the optically active metal complex expressed by formula I. |
