A selfstabilised insulating compsn. comprises a resin liq. emulsion (e.g. a urea-formaldehyde resin) contg. a hardener and lightweight, expanded polystyrene beads uniformly distributed with air bubbles in the emulsion. The compsn. has a structure which makes it stable after hardening. Process and appts. for forming the compsn. are also claimed, the process comprising forming a continuous stream of the resin emulsion with its hardener, creating a stream of compressed air entraining the polystyrene beads, mixing the 2 streams in required amts. to form a homogenesus mass contg. uniformly distributed beads and air bubbles and conveying the mixt. directly to the application zone. The compsn. is used for thermal, acoustic or fireproofing insulation and is injected into a closed space. During hardening it does not undergo shrinkage, making it esp. suitable for spaces of dimensions up to 50 cms.
|
