An adhesive or a sealing compound is applied in a continuous strip of constant thickness by means of a nozzle (1). The nozzle (1) has an outlet (9) with a step (12) formed on one side of the outlet end face. The height of this step (12) is equal to the required thickness of the strip of adhesive or sealing compound. The nozzle is used for sealing the edges of the sheet metal panels for motor vehicle bodies. The nozzle is drawn over the joint line with the step (12) on the leading side.
