Piece goods are transported by rail in wagons (1) which consists of two parts with each part mounted on two axles. The two parts are connected by a coupling (3) and an energy dissipation device (2) is fitted between them. The interior of each part is divided by partitions (14a,14b) mounted on overhead rails (13a,13b). The ends of the two parts adjoining each other are fitted with upper and lower stop rails (10a,10b) and (11a,11b) which partitions (12a,12b). In the event of a shock load being imposed on the end of the wagon the piece goods are prevented from damaging each other by the partitions and the energy of the rear part of the wagon is dissipated by the device (2).
