Floating particulate cover for liq. manure silos, etc. - comprising mixt. of perlite with mixt. of fly-ash, lime and cement and polymeric binder

A covering for liq. manure silos and clarifier basins is made from a mixt. of 90-95 wt. % perlite and 8-3 % of a mixt. of 70 % fly ash, 25 % CaO and 4 % cement, together with 2 % of a polymeric organic binder. Pref. the perlite is hydrophobed and the mixt. has a particle size of up to 1.5 mm. USE/ADVANTAGE - The covering is applied as a layer 10-15 cm deep which floats on the surface of the liq. manure or clarifier liq. to give almost complete suppression of odour and release of gases such as methane. The floating cover is not affected by mechanical stirring, etc., and rises and falls with the level of the material in thee silo. The cover remains on the surface of the liq. during pumping out of silos, etc., and is only destroyed when the silo is completely empty. The used covering can be disposed of safely eg as a soil improvement agent without causing environmental pollution.
