Synthetic aperture sonar apparatus for mapping a target area divides the across track range into two or more divisions, and has a receiver (4,11) for each range division. A number of distinguishable pulse signal forms, equal in number to the square of the number of range divisions, are transmitted in a predetermined sequence, enabling each receiver (4,11) to identify signals received only from its appropriate range division, thus improving across-track range resolution. In another embodiment of the invention, a continuous noise-like waveform is transmitted and signal returns compared with reference waveforms derived from the transmitted signal to obtain the range of a target.
|
