A control system in a microwave oven for use with an object on which an information-carrying code is printed comprises a reader for reading a printed code and means for controlling the oven which are connected to the reader for controlling the oven operation in correspondence with the program which is reproduced by the printed code. The printed code preferably exists in the form of a bar arrangement and the reader is an easily operated light pen reader of the type having a reflecting sensor which is modulated in correspondence with the bar arrangement when the code is scanned by the light pen reader. The control system can also contain a memory for storing at least one predetermined cooking sequence program and a decoder/translator which is connected to the reader and to the memory for selecting a program reproduced by the information contained in the code from the memory and for supplying the program selected in this manner to the control circuit for execution in correspondence therewith. Furthermore, an information-carrying object for use with a microwave oven control system is disclosed which carries printed instructions containing at least one cooking recipe for preparing a food and a corresponding information code which reproduces a desired cooking program for such a food.
