The auxiliary electrodes in a multiple pin electrode arrangement are provided with an insulating varnish in order to enable the carrier medium to be precharged. The precharging is essentially effected before the actual electrode arrangement so that all irregularities of the charge distribution can equalise. In a preferred embodiment, the precharging potential differs by no more than approximately 10 V in the area of the electrode arrangement over the width of the recording medium.
