A fuel injection system has a fuel feed line which runs from a fuel tank to an injection nozzle through a pressure booster and on the fluid side is separated from a fluid circuit for the operation of the pressure booster and from a fluid circuit for the operation of a nozzle needle drive, which is connected on the working side to the fuel injection nozzle for controlling the fuel injection. The two fluid circuits have a common pressure fluid reservoir source, which is independent of the fuel tank and is suitable for operating general hydraulic units. An electronically operated pressure control valve is controlled by a governor, in order to drive the pressure booster at a fluid pressure which varies in proportion to a variable engine load, that is full load, partial load and idling.
