A video camera system comprising a camera head unit (1) having imager means and a microphone (5), a camera control unit (9) for controlling the camera head unit (1), a cable (7) for connecting the camera head unit (1) and the camera control unit (9) and for transmitting a video signal of the imager means and an audio signal of the microphone (5) to the camera control unit (9), an output (29a, 29b) for outputting the transmitted audio signal from the camera control unit (9), a switch (33a, 33b) within camera control unit (9) for selectively permitting the output (29a, 29b) to deliver the audio signal transmitted from the microphone (5), and a control (43a, 43b) within the camera head unit (1) for controlling the switch (33a, 33b).
