Substantially parallel strands (15) of a roving of fibres are pressed against one face of at least one thermoplastic film (17, 19), all the fibres of the strands being subjected to a substantially uniform tension in their lengthwise direction, the film is heated to a sufficient temperature to make it melt in the pasty state, at least partially, while at least partially wetting the surface of all the fibres, the thermoplastic matrix is cooled so as to solidify it while immobilising the fibres and while maintaining them under tension, to obtain a layer of preimpregnated material in which all the fibres are substantially parallel and equally tensioned, and a multiplicity of such layers is then stacked to produce the composite material. <IMAGE>
