An improved electric cable and method of making, is disclosed that results in an electric cable (20, 32) with improved burn resistant characteristics. The improved method consists of a first yarn wrapping portion (40), an impregnating section (42), a drying section (44), a coating section (46), a second drying section (48), and a coiling section for returning the wire to a reel. The method wraps a glass fiber yarn (24) about an electric wire (22) and then impregnates this yarn with a silicone compound. The impregnated yarn is dried and sent to a second coating chamber where an additional silicone compound (30) is coated about the outer periphery of the yarn. The wire goes into a second drying section and then onto the coiling section. In a second embodiment of this invention silicone tape (170) is used as a wrap around the electric wire rather than the glass fiber yarn. |
