The optical device driving method comprises providing a pair of substrates having electrodes which at least partially face each other and are formed on opposing inner surfaces. A liquid crystal material is provided which is sealed between the pair of substrates, whose molecules are initially aligned in directions parallel to each other in accordance with an aligning treatment subjected to the inner surfaces of the substrates. An alignment state of the molecules is controlled by an electronic field applied across the electrodes. The material has a crossover frequecy at which the dielectric anisotropy becomes zero. The polarity of the dielectric anisotropy is inverted in a field of lower and higher frequency than the crossover frequency.
