PURPOSE:To fix the height of the loop of a material to be pickled in a pickling tank by comparing the command value of the preset optimum length of the material in the tank with the length of the material in the tank and controlling the speed of the inlet side bridle roll so that the length of the material is held at the command value. CONSTITUTION:The inlet-side bridle roll 11 or the outlet-side bridle roll 14 is independently operated, and the length of the material to be pickled in a pickling tank 1 is obtained by pulse generators 24 and 27. The operation is continued until the length is controlled to the command value of the material length, and the length is held at the command value, namely the optimum material length in the pickling tank, in the subsequent normal running. The material length is always compared with the command value, and the speed of the bridle roll 11 is controlled so that the length is held at the command value. As a result, the optimum loop height can be maintained regardless of the quality, thickness, width, etc., of the material 9 to be pickled.
