A method of connecting the conductors (3) of electric cables in which the conductors surround a high tensile plastic core (1) employs a tubular metal crimp connector (5) in which are pierced a number of transverse holes (6). The outer insulation (4) is stripped from the copper conductors (3) to be joined, as is also the surrounding sheath (not shown) of the plastic core (1). The core (1) strands are suitabley bunched using binding wires (not shown) and the conductor (3) ends entered into the connector (5) enabling insertion of the strands (1) through holes (6) for typing off (7). Crimping with a conventional press tool completes the joint. USE/ADVANTAGE - In situations requiring a high tensile cable construction e.g. coalmining. Is less time consuming than alternative methods giving a shorter more flexible connection for training cables on mining machinery. Provides a joint with more than 80 oper cent of tensile strength of continuous cable has good electrical conductivity as proved by repeated cycling trials. |
