PURPOSE:To improve the ice-smashing efficiency of the vessel by a method wherein arms, at the tip of each of which a laser device to produce cracks in an ice block by irradiating laser beams is arranged, are provided movably to the ice block or the forecastle in order to produce cracks in the ice block prior to smash the ice block by the thrust of the hull of the vessel. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of the arms 2, at the tip of each of which the laser device 3 is fitted, are disposed in upright on the forecastle deck of the hull 1. The arms 2 are provided movably to the ice block 7 by means of a driving mechanism (not shown) so as to produce initial cracks by irradiating laser beams 6 from above the ice block 7 to the required portions of the ice block 7 under the controlling of the positions of the laser devices 3. Accordingly, the required controlling of the position of the arms 2 and the irradiation of laser beams 6 from the laser devices 3 to the surface of the ice block 7 result in cutting-off the ice block 7 and in producing the initial cracks 8 and in enabling to easily smash the ice block 7 by the thrust of the hull 1. |
