A gas turbine engine 12 has variable guide vanes 28, a turbine 44 and a port 32 positioned upstream of the turbine which allows air to exit the engine. A control system 70 receives a signal representative of turbine overspeed 82 and produces a port adjustment signal 86 for adjusting the port 32 such that air exits the engine in response to the turbine overspeed signal. The guide vanes 28 and the fuel supply may also be controlled 88, 84 in response to detection 82 of overspeed. <IMAGE>
