PURPOSE:To prepare an optically active epichlorohydrin by bringing a specific bacterium belonging to the genus Pseudomonas into contact with racemic 2,3- dichloro-1-propanol in a medium and further treating the product with an alkaline agent. CONSTITUTION:A bacterium belonging to the genus Pseudomonas and having an ability to utilize S-(-)-2,3-dichloro-1-propanol in a prescribed medium to produce R-(+)-2,3-dichloro-1-propanol [R-(+)-beta-DCH]. The cultured solution is filtered and the supernatant of the filtered solution is subjected to an operation such as an active carbon column treatment to fractionate the R-(+)-beta-DCH remained in the supernatant. The fractionated compound is treated with an alkaline agent, preferably a caustic alkali such as caustic soda or caustic potash to prepare optically active epichlorohydrin. |
