A dielectric motor comprises a rotor (4) which is surrounded by one or more electrodes (2a-d) and which has an opening in the interior (5) containing one or more electrodes (1) about which the rotor (4) can move. Possible fields of application are microelectronics, micromechanics, etc. The essential features of the invention are that the rotor (4) can be controlled as desired by the inner electrodes (1) and/or the electrodes (2a-d) which surround it using electric fields. The combination of different dielectric materials together with suitable rotor geometry in conjunction with the type of field excitation permit stepwise, discontinuous or uniform operation of the rotor (4). The inner electrodes (1) result in increased torque. The motor can be miniaturized to a few micrometres.
