Piperidine derivs. of formula (I) and their non-toxic salts are prepd. by the reduction of II or III. In (I), Ar is halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, NO2, NH2, halo-lower alkyl, substd. amino, lower alkoxycarbonyl, cyano-substd. naphthyl, 1,4-benzodioxanyl, indanyl, isoquinolyl; R is substd. Ph, thienyl or pyridyl; R1,R3,R9 are H or lower alkyl; R2 is H; n is 0 or 1; X is = O or = S; Y is -S- or direct bond; Z is -CO- or -CH2- or Z is CO or CH2, with the proviso that Y must be O when Ar is unsubstd. phenyl and R9 is H R1 is H; B- is anion. (I) are psychotropic agents useful as antidepressants.
