In the device, one of the parts 32 comprises a female end and the other part 42 comprises a corresponding male end, and it is characterised in that the cross-section of the coupling is defined by the surface within a closed, noncircular line of polar coordinates whose polar radius has a periodicity equal to 2 pi /n, n being a positive integer greater than one, the beginning of the male portion and the beginning of the bore of the female portion comprising conjugate helical ramps 43 to 48, 34 to 39, such that, on the female portion, they are inscribed between a cylindrical tube 40 of circular internal cross-section whose circumference circumscribes the said coupling cross-section and a cylinder whose cross-section consists of the bore 33 corresponding to the coupling cross-section and such that, on the male portion, they are inscribed between a cylindrical tube whose cross-section consists of the said coupling cross-section and a cylinder 49 of circular cross-section whose circumference, at maximum, falls within the said coupling cross-section.
